Svaneke kirke
Discover Svaneke's very beautiful pink-whitewashed church.
Svaneke Church is located high above the city – about 18 meters above sea level on the southeastern outskirts of Svaneke on Bornholm.
The original church can still be seen
You can still see a remnant of the original Svaneke Church, in the south wall of the current church. The original Svaneke Church was a fairly low square building, measuring about 10.5×9 meters. The foundation of the church dates from the 16th century and the shingle-roofed spire dates from 1789. Svaneke Church had two porches added, but these were demolished in 1837, when the church's current main entrance was built. In addition to being the entrance to the church, the northern porch has had a somewhat unusual function, as there was a gunpowder magazine in the attic for a while in the 18th century.
The pink-whitewashed Svaneke Church
The color scheme of Svaneke Church comes from the church's most recent restoration. The pink color was a fashionable color for some decades in the latter half of the 19th century.
